THE HISTORY OF STATISTICAL SCIENCE STUDY AT SMU

Department of Statistical Science is founded at SMU due to intense industry demand for qualified personnel.

1957

1961

Paul Minton founds the university’s Computing Laboratory.

Paul Minton, the first chair of the department, retires.

1964

1962

SMU faculty establish partnerships with faculty at the University of Texas until 1966.

A THEMIS contract worth one million dollars, obtained through the Department of Defense, is invested in the Statistics Department in order to maintain a center of statistical excellence. SMU graduates its first Statistical Science Ph.D.

The Department of Statistical Science begins offering a Ph.D., one of the first SMU programs to offer a doctoral degree.

The Center for Statistical Consulting and Research is founded in order to provide expert statistical consulting services to the academic community at SMU and the business community in Dallas.

Lynne Stokes becomes department chair.

SMU graduates its 100th Statistical Science Ph.D.

The Department of Statistical Science expands and founds the Biostatistics Ph.D. program. SMU unveils new ManeFrame supercomputer.

The department remains a national center of excellence in the field of statistics and has produced 195 Statistical Science Ph.D.’s and 2 Biostatistics Ph.D.’s. First Biostatistics Ph.D. graduates.
